The Mailbag: Volume 11
Last week’s edition of the mailbag is right here:
My favorite day of the week is back. Well, at least in terms of article writing. It’s time for the mailbag so I’ll answer some of the best questions from around the internet to help us open up a can of whoop-ass on this Tuesday.
Any musicians putting out new music in 2019 you are anticipating?
Hozier has a new album dropping this Spring that I’m ecstatic about. The songs he’s already released off of it are great and though he isn’t necessarily in my genre comfort zone I’m a huge fan of his songwriting abilities which I think are up there with the best. I’m expecting Tyler Childers to come out with new music in 2019 as well and though I can’t confirm or deny this fact, I’d expect it to be sensational. At least, I’m hoping we get another album. Also, I’m pretty sure Fightin’ Texas Aggie and friend of the site, Rich O’Toole will be dropping an album in 2019. He’s got a new single “Peter & Paul” dropping in late March, which I can’t wait to hear. Of course, the King, George Strait is dropping new music as well and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t at least slightly looking forward to it.
Going with the Game of Thrones-themed thread, who do you feel is the hottest chick on GOT?
There’s a second part to this question that I left out for the sake of spoilers just in case any of you who read this haven’t immersed yourself in what is probably the best show on television right now. As for the answer to this question, you could go a lot of ways here. Are we talking specifically the character or the actress who plays the character? I’m leaning towards the latter and going with a tie for first, Missandei (played by Nathalie Emmanuel) and Sansa Stark (played by Sophie Turner). As for the second part of the question, I miss the character you ask about a lot, and if we were going purely off the character and not the actress, I’d probably have said character number one.
Should I impulse buy a car?
No, impulse buying is a terrible practice. Instead, you should Venmo me all the money you were planning on using to buy that car so I can completely plan my barbecue tour of Texas. But in all seriousness, impulse buying is a bad practice. My rule of thumb for buying anything is: Does it provide for Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs? If it achieves something at the top of the pyramid but takes away something from the bottom levels (physiological or safety needs) then it isn’t worth it. So if buying the car is an esteem or self-actualization need but it takes away from your financial security (a safety need) it isn’t worth it. If it won’t impact your financial security, why haven’t you already purchased it? I got entirely too deep on this question, which is fitting considering I just answered a question about the most attractive girl on Game of Thrones.
If Ole Miss vacates wins against us do we retroactively have a better record or how does that work?
The official stance the NCAA takes on this is that the losses stand on the record of an opponent who vacates wins. So no, Texas A&M’s record does not improve in the record book for the two Ole Miss wins over A&M that were vacated in 2014 and 2016. Additionally, even if they were vacated, we all saw those games happen. This is why vacating of wins and titles is the goofiest thing the NCAA does. USC will still be the 2004 BCS National Championship winner. Louisville will still always be remembered for winning the 2013 NCAA Basketball Tournament. Nothing the NCAA does can change that in the minds of the people who witnessed it. One might even argue that it would be worth it to cheat and win a national championship even if it gets vacated. Everyone will still remember who won the championship and no NCAA ruling will change that.
Do you wish to trade Ole Miss for Florida to make A&M’s schedule even harder?
This depends on where the game takes place. If the game is in the Swamp, I don’t think A&M pulls off the win and I’d rather keep the game with Ole Miss. If the game takes place at Kyle Field, I like the Aggies chances and in a season with as many high profile games as A&M has one more huge conference matchup would be a hell of a lot of fun. Of course, there’s always the off-chance that A&M meets the Gators in Atlanta without having to take Ole Miss off the schedule. That’s the scenario I’m really hoping for here.
In brisket, do you prefer smoke flavor or the seasoning a joint may put on it?
All you really need to season a brisket if it is smoked properly is a little bit of salt and pepper. When you get a good bark and the smoke penetrates the meat, there are few better flavors in the world. Of course, if you don’t have the ability to smoke the brisket for the required amount of time to get the flavor just right, then the seasoning will become a little more important. I’m not going to tell everyone that they have to adopt my way of thinking here but again, with salt and pepper, the wood smoke and the meat will provide all of the flavor you need.
As always, I appreciate the questions and keep them coming! You can either post questions you may have here or on Twitter (@JArnoldTAMU85). We’ll be back with another edition of the Mailbag next Tuesday.
